My York air handler in a condo unit has five heat stages. Is that normal?
Yes, larger air handlers, including some found in multi-unit or light-commercial installs, use higher stage counts to reach 20-25 kW of heat output while still staging elements a few seconds apart to control inrush current. Five-stage kits are simply a larger version of the same sequencer-staged design used in smaller residential units.
What's the first thing to check if a York heat kit produces no heat at all?
Check the sequencer and control board before suspecting the elements themselves, since a total loss of heat across every stage points to a control fault rather than several elements failing simultaneously.
