Where to find the data tag on a Skutt
Serial plate on the control box or the kiln stand, carrying model and serial together. Both are required, Skutt revised element specifications across production runs, so the serial determines which set fits.

- GlassMaster Series
What is specific about Skutt
Skutt element life varies more by model than most potters expect. A smaller kiln that is well-powered relative to its volume, such as the 818, can deliver a great many more firings than a large-volume kiln worked at cone 6, where a few hundred firings is a more realistic expectation. Element specifications also changed across production runs, so the serial number is not optional when ordering. Skutt kilns are sectional, and elements are supplied per ring.
How Skutt elements typically fail
- Progressive slowing across firings as element wire oxidises and resistance climbs
- Uneven top-to-bottom firing when one ring ages faster than the others
- Glaze contamination in the element grooves causing localised burnout
Confirm before you order
Test the element before replacing it. A meaningful share of "dead element" calls turn out to be a thermostat, sequencer or limit switch, and the test takes ten minutes with a multimeter. Our resistance test tool tells you what your reading means.
What to send us for a Skutt quote
- Model and serial from the rating plate
- Voltage and wattage, if legible
- A photo of the old element, especially the terminal end
- What the equipment is doing — or failing to do
If the plate has faded past reading, our model number guide covers the other places manufacturers record it.

Skutt element questions
How many firings should I get from Skutt elements?
It depends heavily on which model you have and how hot you fire. A smaller, generously powered kiln such as an 818 can run a great many firings, while a large-volume kiln worked regularly at cone 6 sits far lower. Firing temperature is the dominant factor, sustained high-cone work shortens element life sharply.
Why do you need my Skutt serial number?
Skutt revised element specifications during the production life of several models. Two kilns badged identically but built years apart can take different element sets. The serial plate on the control box is how we make sure you get the right one.
Can I replace just the elements in one ring?
You can, but we do not recommend it. A new element has lower resistance than aged neighbours and puts out noticeably more heat, which causes uneven firing. Replacing the full set keeps the kiln firing evenly and avoids a second teardown soon after.
My firings have got slower but the kiln still reaches temperature. Is it time?
That is the standard warning sign, and it is worth acting on before the kiln stalls mid-glaze firing. Tracking your firing times over a few months makes the trend obvious well before a failure ruins a load of work.
