Duncan replacement elements

Duncan is a legacy ceramics brand and a large number of the units still in service, particularly the Teacher-Plus TC-909 in schools and community studios, are old enough that finding parts through normal retail channels is genuinely difficult.

Find your Duncan model

We hold element counts and supply voltages for 3 Duncan models. Pick yours and we will confirm the spec back to you before asking for anything.

Duncan element specifications

Typical ranges across the Duncan lines we see most. Always confirm against your own rating plate.

Voltage 240V, some 240V/208V
Element wire Kanthal A1
Configuration 4-6 element sections depending on model
Typical life Variable, many units in service are decades old and have already had elements replaced multiple times

Where to find the data tag on a Duncan

On Duncan kilns the data plate is usually mounted on the control box or switch panel. On older units this plate can be faded or missing entirely after decades of use, in which case model identification from the physical kiln shape and element groove layout becomes necessary, and we are used to working that way.

Model series we supply

  • Teacher-Plus TC-909
  • DA-1029
  • EA-1027

What is specific about Duncan

Duncan is a legacy ceramics brand and a large number of the units still in service, particularly the Teacher-Plus TC-909 in schools and community studios, are old enough that finding parts through normal retail channels is genuinely difficult. This is exactly where a manufacturer that winds to order is useful, since we do not need Duncan to still be stocking parts, we need the coil dimensions and resistance, which we can take from the old element, the brick grooves, or a legible data plate. Section counts run four on the Teacher-Plus TC-909 up to six on the DA-1029 and EA-1027. We wind every replacement in-house from Kanthal A1 within ±2% of the target resistance, with a 48-hour standard lead time, and confirm supply voltage since 240V and 208V versions exist and are wound differently even for the same physical model.

How Duncan elements typically fail

  • Element failure from age and cumulative firing hours, common on Duncan units that have been in continuous service for decades
  • Sagging or fully detached coils where the groove itself has worn from repeated element changes over the kiln's life
  • Brittle or corroded terminal connections that need attention alongside the element on older control boxes
  • A dead section on the TC-909 or DA-1029 showing up as slow, uneven, or incomplete firing well before the kiln fails to heat entirely

Confirm before you order

Test the element before replacing it. A meaningful share of "dead element" calls turn out to be a thermostat, sequencer or limit switch, and the test takes ten minutes with a multimeter. Our resistance test tool tells you what your reading means.

What to send us for a Duncan quote

  • Model and serial from the rating plate
  • Voltage and wattage, if legible
  • A photo of the old element, especially the terminal end
  • What the equipment is doing — or failing to do

If the plate has faded past reading, our model number guide covers the other places manufacturers record it.

Duncan element questions

My Duncan kiln is very old and I cannot buy parts for it anywhere. Can you still help?

Yes, this is a common situation with Duncan kilns and it is exactly the kind of job we are set up for. We do not rely on Duncan's own parts supply, we wind from the coil dimensions and resistance we take off the old element or the brick grooves, so age or discontinued status is not a barrier.

The data plate on my Duncan kiln is unreadable. What do you need instead?

Send us the old element if you still have it, or measure the wire gauge, coil diameter, and total groove length in the chamber. Combined with a photo of the kiln so we can confirm the model family, that is usually enough to wind an accurate match even without plate information.

How many elements does a Duncan Teacher-Plus TC-909 use?

The Teacher-Plus TC-909 uses four element sections, while the DA-1029 and EA-1027 use six. If you are unsure which model you have, the physical chamber size and element layout, along with any legible plate markings, will let us confirm it before winding.

Send the model and serial, or a photo of the rating plate. We confirm the exact fit in writing before anything ships.

Send us a photo

Any one of these gets us started. All three and we can usually quote same day.

A clear shot of the rating plate is usually all we need — you do not have to know the part number.

Only if you have it in front of you. Most people don't, and the photo covers it.

Optional, but it is the one number we cannot work out any other way — it verifies everything else. Not sure how?
