Because Reliance covers such a wide range of wattages across its line-up, it is worth confirming the exact wattage on the old element rather than assuming based on tank size or series number. How Reliance elements typically fail

Reliance element questions
Does the Reliance series number tell me which element I need?
Not directly. The series number mostly reflects tank capacity, insulation and warranty length rather than a different element design, so two different series can use the exact same element if the wattage and voltage match. The number stamped on the element itself, or on the rating plate, is what actually determines the correct replacement.
My Reliance tank just had the water drained and refilled, and now the element has failed, why?
This is a very common and specific failure pattern called dry-firing. If the power is switched back on before the tank has fully refilled, or if an air pocket leaves the element briefly exposed, the element can be destroyed within seconds because it has nothing to transfer its heat into. Always confirm the tank is completely full, and ideally run a tap until air stops sputtering out, before restoring power after any drain and refill.
Can I fit a 3800W element where a 5500W one failed to save on running costs?
You can, but be aware it will heat noticeably slower and recovery time between draws will be longer, which matters if the household uses a lot of hot water in succession. What you should never do is go the other way and fit a higher wattage than the circuit was designed for, since that risks overloading the wiring. If in doubt, match the original wattage exactly.
