Where to find the data tag on a GSW
The rating plate is on the front lower jacket panel. On older GSW tanks still in service across Ontario, the plate can be faded, so cross-check the wattage stamped into the element head itself.

What is specific about GSW
GSW is an A.O. Smith brand and one of the most commonly installed water heater names in Ontario, so we see a steady stream of GSW elements come through the shop. Being part of the A.O. Smith family, GSW tanks share tank geometry and element fittings with John Wood and State, and elements cross between the three badges whenever wattage, voltage and mount line up. A lot of the GSW tanks still in service are older units, so the original element wattage stamped on the tank can be hard to read, in which case the safest approach is to read the number directly off the failed element before ordering a replacement. As with any brand, matching the exact wattage and voltage is what keeps the circuit safe, not matching the badge.

How GSW elements typically fail
- Total loss of hot water, typically the upper element or high-limit thermostat has failed
- Hot water depletes fast, typically the lower element has failed or is coated in sediment
- Breaker trips on reset, typically a shorted element
- Popping sounds from the tank, typically sediment insulating the lower element and causing hot spots
Confirm before you order
Test the element before replacing it. A meaningful share of "dead element" calls turn out to be a thermostat, sequencer or limit switch, and the test takes ten minutes with a multimeter. Our resistance test tool tells you what your reading means.

GSW element questions
Are GSW and John Wood elements the same?
They can be, because GSW and John Wood are both A.O. Smith brands and often share the same tank platforms. When the wattage, voltage and 1" NPT mount all match, an element wound to those specifications will fit either badge. The safest way to confirm is to read the numbers off the old element rather than assume from the tank name.
My old GSW tank's rating plate is unreadable, how do I get the right replacement element?
Read the wattage and voltage stamped directly into the metal of the element hex head, which tends to survive much better than the printed jacket label on older tanks. If that is also illegible, the element's physical length and thread size, combined with tank capacity, usually narrows it down. We can also work from the pattern of failure and a photo of the element to confirm the likely original spec before we wind a replacement.
Why does my GSW tank keep failing lower elements?
Repeat lower-element failures in Ontario are very often down to sediment. Hard water leaves mineral deposits that settle to the bottom of the tank and bury the lower element, causing it to overheat locally and fail early even though it is working correctly electrically. Flushing the tank periodically, and considering an Incoloy-sheathed element which tolerates this better than copper, both help reduce repeat failures.
