Will a State or GSW element fit my John Wood tank?
Very likely, yes, because John Wood, GSW and State are all A.O. Smith brands that share tank platforms and element geometry. What determines fit is wattage, voltage and the 1" NPT screw-in thread, not which of the three names is printed on the jacket. My John Wood tank has hot water for a few minutes then goes cold, what's wrong?
That pattern is classic lower element failure. The lower element reheats the tank as water is drawn from the top, so when it stops working you get the hot water already sitting at the top of the tank and then a rapid drop to cold once that runs out. Test the lower element for continuity, and check for sediment sitting on top of it, which is a common cause of premature failure.
Is it safe to fit a 5500W element in a John Wood tank that originally had 4500W?
No, that is not safe. The wiring and breaker feeding the tank were sized to carry the original 4500W load, and increasing the wattage without upgrading the circuit is a genuine fire risk, since the extra current draw can overheat the wiring before the breaker reacts. Always replace with matching wattage and voltage, and if faster recovery is genuinely needed, that requires an electrician to assess the circuit first.
